How to Register your Business Name on CAC

How to Register your Business Name in Nigeria on the CAC Portal

This guide will teach you how to register any business name in Nigeria on the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) website

Step 1:

Public Name Search

The importance of public name search is to check and confirm the name availability of the intended business name to be used during registration.

This will help you reduce the chances of your Name Reservation to be denied. Note that CAC does not permit the use of only one name during business registration and there are certain keywords that is not approved or has some restriction or/and conditions for them to be used for business registration. E.g. Dollar, Nigeria and etc.

It is easier for your business name to be approved when the name has words that give an idea of what the business is all about for example ‘Sky Digitals’. If this name has not been used by someone else it would be easier for it to be approved if you plan registering this business as a digital marketing and social media business.

 To begin visit https://pre.cac.gov.ng

For Tin Application its best you visit the closest FIRS branch near you to apply, it takes few hours and it is free.

You could also do this online by visiting https://www.jtb.gov.ng/ or visit https://tinverification.jtb.gov.ng/Home/Index

Steps online

  1. Visit the JTB (Joint Tax Board) TIN registration portal.
  2. Enter the required details in the respective fields.
  3. Make the respective selections that apply to your business and complete the application form.
  4. After completing, click the ‘Submit’ button. You will be redirected to another page on which you will be required to upload the documents listed in the ‘required documents’ section of the page.
  5. Follow the onscreen instructions and then proceed to submit the duly filled form.
  6. The application will be approved once the information and documents you have provided have been verified.
  7. The officials will then process the TIN for issuance. In case of any issues, the applicant will be contacted and asked to provide the correct information or documents.
  8. After about ten business days from the date of application, your non-individual TIN will be emailed to the applicant. Keep in mind that this period might often stretch to about two months, depending on numerous issues.
  • Opening a Business Bank Account

In opening a business account in Nigeria, you can walk into any of the Bank close to you and tell them you want to open a business account or corporate account.

They should provide an account opening form for you and guide you on what you need and how to fill and submit the form.

The basic requirements are:

  1. Photocopy of your CAC Certificate
  2. Photocopy of your Status Report
  3. TIN (Tax Identification Number)
  4. Business address and photocopy of utility bill to verify address
  5. Business Owner(s) Details (Full name, Address, Contact, etc)
  6. Business Owner(s) Document (Passport Photograph, Photocopy of valid government ID, Photocopy of utility bill to verify address)

Alternatively, you could open a business account with the recent digital banks like Chipper Cash, Kuda, Opay, Moniepoint and etc.

They usually have lesser requirements and it gets easier if the business was newly registered.
